Nearly three years ago I started to get reacquainted with the Tampa I grew up visiting on vacation in my younger years. More recently, events like the Hunahpu Festival and weekend visits to check out the local breweries started to call me to drive over to check out the area. It was during these times that I fell in love with Tampa and the identity that it exudes wherever you are in the city. With my daughter recently being accepted and beginning her studies at USF, I took the opportunity to make my move to Tampa after being in Orlando for 14 years.
Since then, I’ve been fortunate to eat a lot of great food and drink a lot of great beer. Living in Seminole Heights now, it’s hard to pass a block without finding one of the two. What’s even better is having two great places within a couple miles of my house in the Heights.
Who doesn’t enjoy a great taco? Coupling that great taco with great service, by friendly folks who love what they’re doing, it makes it even better. What’s surprising is that these great tacos are made with some of the freshest ingredients I’ve had out of their food truck. My personal favorite: Xtreme Blackened Grouper – some of the tastiest grouper served up with cabbage, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, and mozzarella cheese. Xtreme Tacos does pack up and move over to c. 1949 (a great Seminole Heights neighborhood beer garden) from time to time, so make sure you check out their Facebook page to confirm their hours and location before heading over (a lesson learned recently).
So, how do you make a great taco even better? Well, pair it with beer. Specifically the beer brewed onsite. The folks over at 7venth Sun Brewery have been doing their thing now in Seminole Heights for the last couple of years after opening their Dunedin location in 2012.
After trying several of their beers, I think it’s safe to say my favorite styles are their Berliner Weisse and IPA.
Trust me when I say Passion Balloons is everything. If it’s on the menu when you visit, get it, you won’t be sorry. Full Disclaimer: I’ve been disappointed for quite some time now because it hasn’t been on tap recently, and no one is sure if it’ll make a return (ahem). For some old reliables, I’d recommend the Headbanger and Project Popsicle (both great American IPAs).
You can swing by 7venth Sun Brewery seven days a week in Seminole Heights.
